Cloud FAQ

What is a Cloud Server?

A cloud server is a combination of CPU, Memory, Disk and Network capacity that is partitioned off to make a virtual computing environment. Servers can be quickly added and removed and are dynamic and flexible. They can grow as your demands increase.

The servers are based on VMware virtualization technology, which is the industry leader in cloud virtualization. A cloud server offers many of the same characteristics as a physical server does but is more flexible.

Why do you bill daily?

In many cases, such as in a test/dev environment, you may not need a server for a long period of time. By billing on a daily use basis, we can help organizations looking to perform quick tests without charging them by the month for capacity that is unused.

If you bill daily, why do you show a charge by the month?

Our service level agreement states that our cloud computing environment has an availability target of 100%. While it is nearly impossible to provide 100% uptime, we credit customers for the period of unscheduled downtime that they have incurred. Our infrastructure, Internet Services and Data Center are built to provide 99.9% availability.

If I am not using my server, do I still have to pay for it?

We currently offer three options:
  1. The server is running, and you pay full price.
  2. The server is suspended, and you pay for disk space only.
  3. The server is deleted, and you are no longer charged.

I don't see Linux. Do you offer it?

We currently offer Linux for custom implementations only. Customers requesting Linux are given Secure Shell (SSH) access to the server and an IP address. However, we do not have any management interface to the servers aside from a control panel that you install yourself.

What are the limitations of a Cloud server?

The limitations lie within the components you can add to the server itself. If you have a service that you are looking to host that requires a dedicated hardware component, a dedicated server may be a better choice. Discuss this with our technical sales professionals, and they will direct you to the appropriate service.

Is bandwidth free between Cloud servers?

Yes. All communication between Cloud servers is free.

Can I bridge the networks between my servers that are hosted in your dedicated server environment and in the Cloud?

Yes. We offer the ability to provision your Cloud servers on an existing network or routed through an internal firewall. This is a custom interface service request that you will need to discuss with our technical sales rep.

I want to scale my plan. What do I need to do?

Contact our service desk and we will make it happen.

I see RAM, but what amount of CPU will I get? What type of processors are used?

Each Cloud server has dual-core or quad-core processors that are at least 2 GHz.

By default, the 256 MB plan has 1/64 of the CPU allocation, the 512 MB plan has 1/32 of the CPU allocation, and the 1 GB plan has 1/16 of the CPU allocation. The 2 GB plan has 1/8 CPU, the 4 GB plan has 1/4, the 8 GB plan has 1/2, and the 16 GB plan has full CPU allocation in the server.

In cases where capacity may be an issue, we offer an ability to customize the capacity to meet your application needs. This is a custom service request. Discuss this with our technical sales rep to calculate the appropriate cost.

Can I import or export an image of a server?

Yes, but you will require the assistance of our service desk.

Where is your Cloud located?

We currently offer Cloud Servers in Canada only.

What do you offer for disaster recovery services?

We currently have the ability to replicate our Cloud data to a secondary cloud environment located in a remote city. This service has an additional cost. All other backups are based on internal snapshot technology. We encourage customers to maintain a copy of their data offsite, based on their business requirements.
